Not since the American Civil War have the people of the United States been so divided.  And just as with the crisis gripping the nation in the 1860s, this situation has escalated over time due to a multi-faceted array of geopolitical, demographic, technological and psychological factors that few among us fully appreciate.  What are these factors?  Why have we not been able to deal with them?  And what are the implications for investors, policymakers, and the “average” American?  We’ll explain.
