If Trends subscribers know only one thing, it’s that the global rate of change is accelerating. Perhaps the most pervasive and unrelenting change we’re facing is the advance in computing power and communications capabilities driven by Moore’s Law and network effects. The point at which the rate of progress effectively becomes infinitely fast is referred to as “the Singularity.” In the past 15 years or so, a small but growing group within the technological elite has emerged with an all-encompassing vision of this Singularity and the world that lies beyond. This vision, which is variously termed “Singularitarian” or “transhumanist,” is being most articulately popularized by inventor Raymond Kurzweil. We’ll review the key elements of this vision, where it’s likely to lead, and what you need to know to profit from it.
