From the end of the Cold War until at least 2015, globalization and its ideological counterpart, globalism, appeared to be unstoppable. Comparative advantage and free markets triumphed nearly everywhere.

But more recently, decelerating trade and investment accompanied by rising international tensions have heralded the arrival of a countervailing trend often called "deglobalization."
